New Vehicle Registrations
Please bring the following:
Duplicate Registration
- New Vehicle Information Sheet (NVIS If applicable)
- The original Bill of Sale or Lease Agreement. If more than one person is listed on the original Bill of Sale both people must be present at the time of registration or an Authorization Form must be completed by the person(s).
- Valid insurance slip in the same name(s) as on the original Bill of Sale or lease agreement.
- Driver’s Licence(s)
A duplicate registration can only be printed for a valid registered plate. Only the current registered owner of the vehicle can request this service. If the owner is not present, a letter of authorization is required to reprint the registration.

- The original Bill of Sale. If more than one person is listed on the original Bill of Sale both people must be present at the time of registration or an Authorization Form must be completed by the person(s).
Out of Province vehicles require an inspection. Bring the ownership documents to the New Urban Registry to receive the request form from the Motor Vehicle system. Once the vehicle has successfully passed this inspection it is eligible for Alberta registration.
If the vehicle is being imported from another country, documentation from Canada Customs is required to prove that the car is eligible for registration. Customs will provide you with the necessary forms when the vehicle first enters the country. For Canadian residents who wish to import a vehicle from the USA or other countries, please visit the Registrar of Imported Vehicles.
Registration Renewals
Sign up for a renewal reminder through email as the government has discontinued mailing our reminders.
Please bring the following:

You can have a plate exchange done if your old plate is worn out. The owner of the vehicle must be present in the office or a letter of authorization will be required.

Change of Address for Vehicle Registrations
- Driver’s Licence
Albertans are required by law to update addresses on both their driver’s licence and vehicle registration within 14 days of moving. New Urban Registry will reprint the vehicle registration after the change on the driver’s licence has been made. Not updating your driver’s licence at the same time as registration could result in a fine if discovered by law enforcement.
Cancelling your Vehicle Registration
To cancel your licence plates and registration, you can visit New Urban Registry or send
in your request, if you are no longer in the province.
- In-Person: You will also need to provide identification to prove you are one named on the registration card. The prorated unused portion of the original registration fee (if any) will be refunded by the government, by mail, minus a $10.00 government administrative processing fee. Also, you will be required to pay the $9.00 registry service fee. You may keep your plates to use at another time.
- Out of Province: If you are now living out of province, fax or email a copy of your identification, a fully completed Registration Cancellation or Licence Plate Declaration Form, and a money order made payable to New Urban Registry for $9.00 (we can also send a link for a secure credit card payment, please include your email on the form). The prorated unused portion of the original registration fee (if any) will be refunded from the government, by mail, minus a $10.00 government administrative processing fee. Cheques can only be sent to a Canadian address if your address is different than what is on file please put your current address on the form.
